BloombergQuint and the ICA spotlight, publishing excerpts from, Dr. Kara Tan Bhala’s Ethics in Finance: Case Studies from a Woman’s Life on Wall Street.

BloombergQuint

BloombergQuint recently published an extended excerpt from Ethics in Finance. Here are some comments on LinkedIn posts about this excerpt:

““Window dressing”, “portfolio pumping”, “leaning for the tape,” and “marking up” — a fascinating insight into unethical practices in active fund management and one manager’s struggle to keep her moral compass intact”

Robin Powell

“It shows that the constant pressure to perform that is measured in the league tables and ratings is not in the interest of long term investors. We who have worked in the asset management business have all done it. This is clearly dishonest (not illegal). Interestingly enough it is the unfortunate WOODFORD, who attempted to make long term investments in entrepreneurial companies is the one getting the flak.”

– Mark St. Giles

“Happens everyday just watch the closes on most indexes there will normally be some kind of manipulation normally from 4 to 5 o’clock. The Dow will often move 100 pts in the last 5 mins of the day somewhere someone will be trying to strike a benchmark at a projected level.”

– Brett Nugent

Collaboration with the ICA

Dr. Kara Tan Bhala is collaborating with the ICA (International Compliance Association) on using curated materials from Ethics in Finance specifically for ICA members. Here’s the latest announcement from the ICA about the collaboration:

inCompliance editor, James Thomas, speaks to Dr. Kara Tan Bhala about her new book Ethics in Finance: Case Studies from a Woman’s Life on Wall Street.

In a series compiled especially for ICA, case study materials from Dr. Tan Bhala’s book will be made uniquely available to the ICA’s community from October.

These materials focus on ethical issues in finance which the author encountered over nearly a 30-year career in the industry.

In her interview for inCompliance Dr. Bhala explains why the series are a must-read for modern compliance and financial crime prevention professionals and how ICA members can benefit from them. Read the full interview in the September edition of inCOMPLIANCE.
